Apple Watch Ultra 3: News, Expected Price, Release Date, and Specs

A refresh of the Apple Watch Ultra may be on the horizon, though it’s not certain. Here’s what you can expect regarding the release, pricing, and potential features of the next Ultra smartwatch from Apple.

Release Date

The previous two models, the Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2, were released in September 2022 and 2023, respectively. It would make sense for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 to follow this pattern, potentially arriving in September 2024.

However, there have been no official announcements or significant leaks about a new Ultra model. Notably, renowned leaker Ming-Chi Kuo suggested in late 2023 that Apple might not release an Ultra model in 2024. According to Kuo, the delay is due to the need for more development time for innovative health management features, manufacturability concerns, and issues with Micro LED production.

Despite this, we still expect a new Apple Watch Ultra at some point. We’ll be monitoring upcoming Apple events for any announcements.

Price Rumors

The expected price for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is likely to remain at $799, the same as its predecessors.

Pre-Order Information

Pre-orders for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 will not be available until Apple officially announces the device. Once announced, it will be available on the Apple Store, and we will provide a pre-order link here.

In the meantime, you can explore the current Apple Watch models available.

Expected Features and Specs

Without official details from Apple and with considerable time until the possible release, information on the Apple Watch Ultra 3’s features is limited. However, based on the progression from the first two models, we can speculate on some potential improvements:

  • New Chip: The Ultra 2’s S9 chip powers on-device Siri and the double-tap feature. An upgraded chip in the Ultra 3 could bring further enhancements, possibly including integration with the Apple Vision Pro VR headset.
  • Storage: The Ultra 2 saw storage doubled from 32 GB to 64 GB. While another doubling seems excessive, significant AI features or a major Siri update might require more local storage.
  • Size Options: Currently, the Ultra series comes in a single 49mm size. Offering multiple sizes, similar to Samsung and Google smartwatches, would be a welcome addition.
  • Software: The next Apple Watch will run watchOS 11, potentially featuring a remappable side button for quick access to any app. If the Ultra 3 is delayed until 2025, it would run watchOS 12.
  • MicroLED Display: Rumors about a microLED Apple Watch have circulated for years. Benefits include better battery life and improved display quality. However, high costs have delayed its inclusion. Apple is reportedly exploring new suppliers and processes, but a microLED Apple Watch might still be years away.

Other Considerations

  • Patent Disputes: The blood oxygen feature was removed from the Ultra 2 in the US due to a patent dispute. This issue might be resolved in time for the Ultra 3’s release.
  • New Sensor Technology: A patent titled “Crown for an Electronic Watch,” dated February 20, 2024, suggests potential new sensor technology for future Apple Watches. This could involve a smaller Digital Crown, freeing up internal space for better components.
